Pear Tree Education is offering the ultimate in Vancouver summer camps for boys and girls aged 5-14. Each summer camp run from 9 am – 3 pm at our learning centre in Kitsilano. Pear Tree Education is about to change your idea of summer camps. With any Pear Tree summer course, your child will spend as much time as possible outside, experiencing education hands-on in the open air. Your child will learn and experience diverse skills and goals, such as multidisciplines (science, math, social studies, and language arts), creativity, teamwork, technology, public speaking, sports, and critical thinking. Furthermore, Pear Tree offers some of the most unique educational experiences, connecting education to the community!

2018 Summer Camps Vancouver

Week 1: July 3rd – 7th (4-day week)

Drama 101 (5-6)

Let your imaginations run wild in this class! Dramatic play is not only fun and engaging for young children, but it’s an important way for them to explore and make sense of the adult world.

Our drama specialist will engage students in a variety of drama-based games, and provide a safe environment for children to try out different roles.

Students will also have lots of opportunities for play-based learning in our dramatic play centers.

Photography (7-9)

Vancouver is one of the most photogenic cities in the world, especially in the summer! Join us for a week of capturing this beauty by learning about composition and creating meaning behind photography.

You’ll learn all about basic digital photography techniques and use these to take some great photos. As well, you’ll have the opportunity to turn your photos into cards.

PLEASE NOTE: It is recommended that students bring their own digital camera or iPad for this course.

TV Reporters (10-14)

Do you like being in front of the camera? Whether you’re interested in Talk Shows, weather reports, movie reviews, or on-location News Reports, Pear Tree’s TV reporter has something for you.

Over the week, you’ll prepare and create a series of different TV productions using digital technology, and edit them using sophisticated video editing software you’ll even use Green Screen effects! During the course, you will go on a field trip to the CTV newsroom.

This is an amazing course for developing Public Speaking skills!

Week 2: July 9th – 13th

Painters Pallet (5-6)

As painters, we will have lots of time to try different paints and painting techniques! We’ll work with water colour, acrylic and tempera paints.

Our paintings will be inspired by nature, animals, literature, our friends and family, and even the summer weather!

The young artists of this course will have a small portfolio of art pieces to share with you at the end of this week.

Math Magicians (7-9)

If you think learning math involves doing worksheets and quizzes, we’re about to change your mind! This is a fantastic, hands-on approach to learning math and connecting math to real life.

We’ll explore measurement, create our own word problems, study shapes, try several different addition and subtraction strategies, and work with money.

We will also play lots of math games to strengthen our number sense in fun, age-appropriate way!

Sports Science (10-14)

Science separates sports amateurs from the professionals.

At Pear Tree, in addition to playing different sports, students will study and implement sports health and food nutrition, make their own smoothies and health snacks, learn about kinetics, practice special exercising methods, use technology & apps, and develop their own digital training regime.

PLEASE NOTE: Pear Tree’s healthy Hot Lunch Program is mandatory for this course, as food is provided throughout the week. Therefore, an additional $66 must be added to the camp price.

Week 3: July 16th – 20th

Go Green Eco Team (5-6)

Want to learn about how you can “go green”?

At Pear Tree, you’ll learn how to be better citizens, both locally and globally, through fun and practical ways. We’ll plant terrariums, create our own worm farm, and even make our own eco-friendly soap!

Some great outdoor activities we’ll be doing include participating in recycling relays, as well as storm drain marking to increase awareness about protecting our local salmon streams!

Marine Biology (7-9)

Artificial Intelligence (10-14)

Through the exploration of the short story ‘Supertoys Last All Summer Long’ by Brian W. Aldiss (that inspired the film ‘A.I.’), Pear Tree will look at various aspects of artificial intelligence.

Pear Tree’s ‘A.I.’ camp will expand your child’s math capabilities: spacial reasoning and problem-solving. Through various iPad apps, your child will develop a foundational understanding of programming, and
will apply that to problem-solving challenges using our very own Dash robot nicknamed ‘Peary’!

‘A.I.’ encapsulates perfectly Pear Tree’s interdisciplinary educational method.

Week 4: July 23rd – 27th

Under the Sea (5-6)

Pear Tree Education is lucky to be located close to some of the perfect beaches for beachcombing and exploration!

During the Under the Sea course, we will explore both local and exotic marine life.

Each day will include experiments, art, stories, water sensory activities and even drama related to the ocean.

This course includes a field trip to the beach.

Eco Art (7-9)

Some of the most fun art to create is made of different recycled materials, mediums and of course, your imagination!

Each day will have a different focus on reusable materials and visual elements. While students will still use traditional materials such as paint, construction paper, and pastels, we’ll also use natural items such as cork, stones and leaves, as well as recycled materials such as buttons, glass jars, newspapers and fabric.

Film School (10-14)

Action, drama, and comedy! We have one week to create, film, and edit a theatrical movie, and we need your help!

With movies requiring a massive team, there is guaranteed to be a role for you: live acting, voice-overs, directing, filming, editing, music, or writing.

Come and find out if you can make it in the movie industry.

Week 5: July 30th – Aug 3rd

Nature Explorers (5-6)

Join us in a week of outdoor adventures, where we’ll learn about nature and how to take care of it!

We will learn about BC’s old growth forests, build a hummingbird feeder, use natural items to make eco-art, and take photography of nature.

Through daily nature walks, lots of outdoor play, as well field trips to local natural settings, we’re sure you’ll discover something new about nature this week!

Ancient Olympians (7-9)

In this course, students will learn about Ancient Greek myths and legends, and make connections to how Ancient Greece influenced today’s society.

We’ll cook food and feast like the Ancient Greeks, create some Greek mosaic art, build a Greek-inspired building and perform Greek Reader’s Theater.

Our course will be concluded with “Mini Olympics”, where students in the course design the activities for all Pear Tree students to participate in! This is a great leadership and community building opportunity.

Cooking Science (10-14)

Cooking is both an art and a science. Pear Tree’s cooking science course is the best hands-on method for kids to develop a fascination and deeper understanding of chemistry.

Students will learn about, cook with, and eat a variety of ingredients that transform depending on how they are prepared.

Week 6: August 7th – 10th (4-day week)

Super Structures (5-6)

Do you like to build things? Are you an aspiring engineer? Then this hands-on exploration course is for you!

During this course, you will learn basic building principals and apply your knowledge by taking part in daily structure challenges!

You will learn how to apply critical thinking skills, how to be a creative designer and problem-solver, and apply math, science and design concepts using a variety of building materials, including straws, paper, clay, blocks, K’Nex, Lego and even eggs!

Junior Scientists (7-9)

Get your lab coats and beakers ready!

Science is always fun when you’re doing the experiments! In this exciting, hands-on course, we’ll be conducting a variety of experiments, learning about the scientific method, carrying out observations and recording data in our science journals, just like real scientists.

Among our activities will be ‘Flubber’ making, dissections, and even kitchen science, where we get to eat our experiments!

Makerspaces (10-14)

In Pear Tree’s Makerspace camp, students work on collaborative, technology-driven projects that require the creative use of resources and multidisciplinary knowledge.

Taking place over a 4-day week, your child will explore circuits, music, art, and robotics. Some of the technology we will use will include Makey Makey, Little Bits, Snap Circuits, and a Dash robot.

PLEASE NOTE: There is a $10 additional materials fee for this course.

Week 7: August 13th – 17th

Urban Gardeners (5-6)

In this course, we’ll give you tips to be a successful gardener in the city.

We’ll learn about the plant life cycle, collect seeds, categorize plants, and do plant art.

We’ll also create our own compost to improve our plants’ growth, and plant seedlings of our own to take home at the end of the course!

This course includes a field trip, where we’ll learn from experts about their urban gardening techniques.

Mixed Media Art (7-9)

Some of the most fun art to create is made of different recycled materials, mediums and of course, your imagination!

Each day will have a different focus on reusable materials and visual elements. While students will still use traditional materials such as paint, construction paper, and pastels, we’ll also use natural items such as cork, stones and leaves, as well as recycled materials such as buttons, glass jars, newspapers and fabric.

Photo(shop) (10-14)

If want to practice more advantage photography and learn how to edit photos in Adobe Photoshop, then Pear Tree’s Photo(shop) camp is for you.

You’ll take photos for daily themes, and will edit these photos to refine them. You’ll also create an online portfolio to remember and share with family
and friends.

PLEASE NOTE: Students should bring their own digital camera.

Week 8: August 20th – 24th

It’s A Small World (5-6)

We will travel the world in 5 days! Each day, students will focus on a different region of the world.

Our class will study songs, art, stories, dances, and traditions from various countries. We’ll even make and try some food from other countries!

Some of the places we’ll study include Kenya, India, China, France, and Mexico!

Food, Glorious Food (7-9)

Yes, food is glorious! Vancouver is such a “foodie” city, with so many different dishes and fresh, healthy things to eat. In this course, we’ll introduce students to basic nutrition, prepare a dish each class, learn about fitness and healthy living.

We will do blind taste-testing, make food art, and even take food photography! Students will gain an appreciation for trying new things and how food impacts their body.

PLEASE NOTE: Pear Tree’s healthy Hot Lunch Program is mandatory for this course, as food is provided throughout the week. Therefore, an additional $66 must be added to the camp price.

Young Detectives (10-14)

If you love problem solving, science and a good mystery, this is the course for you!

Through age-appropriate mysteries, you’ll learn about DNA, fingerprints, footprints and other trace evidence, as well as facial composites.

You’ll develop deduction, math skills, problem-solving and critical thinking skills by working collaboratively.

The skills you learn will be put to the test on the final day, when we create a crime scene for you to investigate.

Week 9: August 27th – 31st

Wetland Wonders (5-6)

Ponds and wetlands are an important part of Vancouver’s ecosystem, and as young biologists, we’ll study some of wetlands features up close.

We will learn about the life cycle of a frog, study water plants, observe local birds, and do pond dipping! Each day will have a different focus and we will explore through art, drama, literature, and experiments.

This course includes a field trip to a local pond, where we can observe a wetland habitat’s features.

Animation Studios (7-9)

Calling all future movie directors! Using computers, digital cameras, and interactive Smartboards, your team will create and direct several of your own animations and short films.

You’ll make storyboards and scenery, and will create your own short animation and film. You’ll learn how to add voice-overs, words, music and sound effects. Each day, we will learn a different drama technique, and we’ll even do some of our own acting to film!

PLEASE NOTE: It is recommended that students bring their own digital camera or iPad.

Pearformers (10-14)

Dance, theatre, and musical theatre, Pear Tree’s Pearformers course has a little bit of everything of the performing arts! We’re bringing Broadway to West Broadway.

Whether or not your child already does acting, dancing, or singing, in Pearformers we’ll start from the basics and will work upwards to create small group performances. If you’re confident enough to do a solo performance, there’s room for that, too!
