The City of Richmond is hosting annual Earth Week celebrations from April 16 to 24, 2022 as a fun and educational way for families to engage in sustainable environmental practices, learn about nature and local ecology and to beautify the community. The weeks’ events feature a public tree plant, children’s activities and a number of community workshops and educational session hosted by the City of Richmond and led by various community partners.

Introduction to Birding
Join Richmond local, Yousif Attia, an expert birder and ornithologist with Birds Canada, for a crash field course to get started with birding. This is a great opportunity to learn about this fast growing pastime and City of Richmond parks and natural areas that are renowned for bird diversity situated within the Fraser Estuary Key Biodiversity Area. Foraging to Ink Making
Learn the fundamental technique of creating ink from plant materials in this hands-on session that starts with a short walking tour of Terra Nova Rural Park to identify indigenous and invasive plants found in the Lower Mainland. Wear weather-specific shoes and clothes and bring flowers specimens such as roses, elderberry leaf, willow stem and salmon berries or food scrap materials such as beets, onion skins, blueberries and spinach. Avoid bringing acidic materials such as cedar, pine, yew, coffee and citrus. In addition, bring a pruning tool or scissors and small glass or plastic jars to take home plant-based ink. Pre-requisite: 15+ years due to the equipment and tools used (electric burners and pruners). This session is facilitated by Ian Lai, Executive Director with the art technique developed by Ed Fu-Chen Juan. Registration required.

My Life with the Honey Bee
Learn the basics of the honey bee cycle, taste some local honey and gain more appreciation and understanding of these amazing creatures and the role this species plays in maintaining plant life. This session is led by Ian Lai, Executive Director and beekeeper, and covers the life cycle of honeybees, the importance of pollinators, how to increase biodiversity, how to support and create bee habitats and information about becoming backyard beekeeper. Earth Day in East Richmond
Show the earth some love at Cambie Community Centre. Bring any confidential papers to be securely shredded on-site and recycled. No reservations required.

Do you have old electronics that are gathering dust? The Electronic Recycling Association will be on-site to recycle old cell phones, tablets and laptops.
A suggested donation of $10 per bankers’ box or equivalent. (No change provided). Drop-off of accepted electronics is free.

Ways to participate year-round
Geocaching (ongoing)

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game that uses a smartphone or GPS device. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates to find the prize - a hidden geocache container. With 3 million active geocaches around the world, the hunt can be taken internationally. Visit the Geocaching webpage for more information.

Adventure Lab (ongoing)
The Geocaching Adventure Lab is an app that allows you to complete in engaging scavenger hunts. Adventure Labs differ from traditional Geocaching as they don't feature physical cache containers, just pure virtual exploration, problem-solving, and fun! Start playing Richmond GeoTour Terra Nova Adventure Lab.

Partners for Beautification Program
Residents looking to participate in other ways can consider the Partners for Beautification Program, which promotes citizen stewardship in Richmond. This program supports individuals, groups and businesses looking to clean up litter by adopting an area in their neighbourhood, or engaging in shoreline clean-ups along the many trails that line the island city.
