Silent Witness-Photographs of Shipwrecks- Stefano Benazzo

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sun, 07/18/2021
Silent Witness features a collection of photographs by Italian photographer and artist Stefano Benazzo who has spent decades seeking shipwrecks from some of the most remote locations around the globe. His work narrates the scenes of these wrecks with light and portrays the soul of the abandoned vessels. The photographs in Silent Witness tell the story of decay for these ships, capturing their architecture and presenting them as sculptures embedded in the landscape.

Wood and iron skeletons of ships abandoned by their crews of years or decades past are stranded on beaches and in intertidal zones the world over. These relics occupy a liminal space within the landscape and within our collective memory, monuments slowly decaying and being reclaimed by the landscape and water. Shipwrecks represent fragments of our history, of human endeavour remembered and forgotten. These silent witnesses preserve the echoes of journeys and observe the changing environment.

Photographer, sculptor, architectural and naval model maker, Stefano Benazzo has shown his work in many exhibitions all over the world. His photos have been used for book covers, and have been published in well-known art magazines. He has been awarded the title of “Accademico di Merito” by the Accademia di Belle Arti “Pietro Vannucci” in Perugia, Italy (January 2018), the “Special Prize of the Jury” of the Carlo Marincovich Prize, Rome (April 2018), and the “Acqui Ambiente” Prize, Acqui Terme, Italy (June 2019)”.
