Young Farmer Camp - Summer

*The event has already taken place on this date: Mon, 08/26/2019
For many people living in cities, farm camps were their only experiences on farms as children and teenagers. These adventures are fundamental to understanding our food systems, appreciating healthy farming, and developing wonder and care for the natural world. At Southlands Farm, we take a stand to inspire mind-full behaviour and sustain-able stewardship.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.
  • Farm Crafting and Building
Using things we find in nature, we will experiment with traditional building techniques from baskets to bracelets to cob structures or knitting. It's amazing what you can create without going to a dollar store for glue and sparkles. Together we will also use basic tools to build with wood. Bring your imagination!

    Farm Wildlife and Nature Exploration
There are so many wild animals on the farm and in the neighbourhood! During this camp, we will explore the farm and surroundings in search for animal tracks, birdcalls, rare plants and extraordinary insects! You will learn a lot about protecting nature in your own backyard and neighbourhood.

    Farm experiments and sciences
How many different insects are there in the compost? Do chickens prefer grass or dandelions? Do bees prefer blue or pink flowers? And many more questions! We will design experiments to find out!

    Survival Skills
Start a fire, navigate with a map, identify and harvest wild edibles, gain the mind-set of a survivor, and explore a diversity of essential survival skills!

Every day, we start and end the camp with a farmer circle where each of us gets a chance to share a thought and participate in a discussion. These moments contribute to the team spirit of the group and to developing our speaking and listening skills.
