BC Youth Week Arts
Since early 2024, youth at three community centres have been expanding their notions of art making in explorations with textiles, bookmaking and audio recording projects.
As part of the Artists in Communities Project, Aaron Friend Lettner has instilled an appetite for intergenerational sharing of personal memories at Dunbar Community Centre. Youth and seniors have come together to co-create hand made books rendered visually through photography, drawing, painting, collage. At Mt Pleasant, Artist in Community, Toni Leah Yake has introduced youth to new friends Cecelia and MaxMSP, a.k.a. music software and audio platforms, to realize audio landscapes and recording projects. At the Roundhouse artist Karen Thảo La has engaged the centre’s youth in examining how cultures across the globe use textiles as an expression of identity and a form of resistance.
