CTYP Drama Camps run from July 4th to August 5th, with many different themed and guided weeks!
CAROUSEL DRAMA CAMPS
July 4-8 and July 25-29 (ages 7-12)
Our full-day Drama Camps introduce young people to theatre through games, storytelling, improvisation, and character creation. Participants will learn to use acting techniques to explore creativity and individual expression. Building off of the students’ interests and unique perspectives, students will use theatre-making methods for exploring and creating new works, whether for a solo actor, a small group, or for the full ensemble. Young actors will develop performance tools while sharing their ideas in a collaborative space.
Weather permitting, students will spend some class time outside.
SUPERHERO CAMP
Jully 11-15 (ages 7-12)
This camp explores what it means to be a (super)hero using both acting and theatre-making exercises, as well as those commonly found in contemporary role-playing games (or “RPGs”). In other words, through the acts of play, storytelling, and tabletop role-playing game mechanics, students will build their own superhero characters and navigate theatrical obstacles and adventures throughout the week.
This Superhero camp will involve collaborative storytelling and ensemble story-making; character creation; voice and singing; pantomime, movement, and dance; arts and crafts; guided and structured improvisations. This will be a fun drama camp revolving around the theme of superheroes, where ultimately, it is our notions of confidence, creativity, and most of all, friendship, that makes us “super”!
Weather permitting, students will spend some class time outside.
IMPROV CAMP
July 18-22 (ages 7-12 & 13-17)
This full-day camp will teach the basics of improvisational theatre, short-form games, and theatre sports before moving into long-form improv scene work and storytelling.
Working with professional and experienced Vancouver improvisers, throughout the week, students will combine their favourite improv exercises and formats and learn how to apply their skills in an improv show setting.
As it is improv, the exact structure of the camp is subject to change according to what the students’ goals are and what kind of improv they want to explore!
SHAKESPEARE INTENSIVE
July 25-29 (ages 13-17)
This week-long intensive will be an exciting crash course in all things Shakespeare! We will delve into the words and poetry of our favourite plays, learn new performance skills in scene studies and monologues chosen just for you, and have it all culminate in an intimate presentation for our invited guests at the end of the week!
