Fighting To Be There

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sat, 11/19/2022
Fighting to Be There takes a critical look at the treatment of soldiers during war and peacetime. It explores the discrimination faced by various military personnel based on their race, sexuality, or gender despite gallantly serving their nation, as well as the changes in attitudes that have happened over time.

Fighting To Be There is our Remembrance exhibit which features a series of large-scale panels of diverse soldiers like Saik'uz First Nation soldier Dick Patrick, a highly decorated WW2 soldier, who faced much discrimination upon return. Among others, the exhibit features Michell Douglas, who filed a lawsuit against the military in 1990 for being dismissed due to her sexual orientation, or Captain Andrew White, the only Black-Canadian officer in World War One, who speaks about the racist conditions he encountered at the front.

Many soldiers hoped to receive integration into society, due to their service but failed to receive this vital support from their country. The exhibition talks about the often-flawed treatment veterans receive, ranging from an out of proportion high percentage among the un-housed to issues of mental health.

Next to panels and military artifacts the exhibition displays four original re-prints of 1920 German etchings, depicting the horror and disillusionment with the war.
