Illustrator Visit: Udayana Lugo

Udayana was the quiet child who sat in the classroom with one ear to the teacher and her eyes on the doodles she made on all of her notebooks. Having grown up as a minority, she is passionate about representation. Prior to becoming a children’s book illustrator, she was a product designer, and you can guess that by the amount of detail she works into her art.

She has illustrated more than 15 books, including Pink is for Everybody! (Owlkids Books), which was featured on CBC Kids; When You Meet a Dragon (Orca), which made it to the CBC Kids Reads 2025 longlist; and City Beet (Sleeping Bear Press).
Udayana lives on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded land of the Musqueam and Squamish nations, also known as Richmond, BC, Canada, with her husband, two children, and a dog.
During her visit, Udayana will read one of the books she illustrated and show you her process, from printing a book manuscript to colouring the pages. She’ll bring her original sketches and explain step by step how a picture book is created.
Best for school-age kids, ages 6 and up.
