Hands-on activities: Multi-Purpose Room (20)

11 am-3:30 pm

  • Wednesdays, March 18 & 25
  • Fridays, March 20 & 27

Explore archaeology through hands‑on learning activities that bring the past to life. Examine SFU’s medieval donation through 3D replicas; explore concepts like stratigraphy and dating techniques; and try your hand at digging. Meet Chris Verral, Burnaby’s Civic Archaeologist, and learn more about archaeology in Burnaby and how Reconciliation connects to archaeological practice.

  • Medieval donation – visitors can learn more about this celebrated chance find that made its way from a thrift shop to the SFU Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology for further research and investigation. SFU will have 3D printed copies of some of these artifacts for visitors to engage in and learn from.
  • Archaeological dig “sandbox” – visitors can dig through a rubber crumb sandbox to find 3D printed artifacts and learn about the processes involved in an archaeological dig.
  • Stratigraphy interactive – visitors learn about stratigraphic layers underground and how these layers are an important dating technique. (e.g. how to tell the age of excavated artifacts?)
