Ages for which our activities are most appropriate:
The stunning, natural and nautical splendour of the oldest shipyard in British Columbia will come to life with maritime-themed activities. Come and enjoy live music, food trucks, artists, and a display of beautifully restored wooden boats and ships. Located along the Steveston Channel on the south arm of the Fraser River, originally a cannery and then converted to a shipyard, Britannia represents an important era in the historical development of Richmond. Twelve heritage buildings on the site help to tell the many stories of the multi-ethnic residents and fisheries workers at the Britannia Shipyard: Chinese, European, First Nations and Japanese-Canadians. Visitors can also tour many of the historic buildings, several of which have been restored to reflect their original roles in the West Coast fishing industry.

Each year, the Richmond Maritime Festival takes place in late August at Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site. The free, family-friendly event celebrates the history of Steveston with maritime-themed programming that spans live music, art installations, and more. Children can learn to crochet sea creatures, make origami, and encounter sea-inspired puppets like Lulu the Mermaid and Rikki the Rat. Boat enthusiasts can get up close to the SS Master tugboat, MV Gikumi, and more beautifully restored wooden boats. Musicians like Norine Braun, The Seabillys, and more will keep spirits high across the 8-acre historic site, which will also feature more than 10 different food trucks. History buffs will want to explore the heritage buildings that once housed multicultural residents and fisheries workers.
